-
human only部門
with AI部門
human only部門
with AI部門
AtCoder is considering introducing the following two participation divisions for long-term AtCoder Heuristic Contests (hereinafter, long-term AHCs).
-
human only division
A division in which participants may not use generative AI for contest participation, except for limited uses such as code completion and translation of the problem statement -
with AI division
A division in which participants may use generative AI to consider solution approaches, generate or modify code, analyze execution results, and perform other related tasks
We are conducting a survey to understand the demand for each proposed division in long-term AHCs, participants' preferred format of participation, and where the boundaries of future generative AI usage rules should be drawn. Please respond through the registration form.
Background
Depending on the subscription plan, recent generative AI services can take only a problem statement and autonomously continue devising approaches, generating code, running programs, evaluating results, and improving the solution for an extended period of time.
A major appeal of AHC is the process of studying the problem, forming hypotheses, and repeatedly implementing and testing ideas to improve a solution. However, if a high-performance generative AI can perform this entire process, participants' own reasoning and trial and error may have less influence on their results, making this form of competitive experience less enjoyable.
More expensive AI plans may also provide access to longer reasoning time, more trials, and greater parallel processing. We are therefore concerned that contest results may be significantly affected not only by participants' own ideas, but also by how much they can afford to spend on generative AI.
On the other hand, long-term AHCs often require a larger amount of code. For participants who routinely use generative AI in their development workflow, a complete ban on generative AI may create a significant barrier to participation.
We are therefore considering dividing long-term AHCs into a human only division and a with AI division, so that both participants who wish to compete by performing the reasoning, implementation, and improvement themselves, and participants who wish to use generative AI, have an opportunity to participate.
Both divisions are expected to use the same problem and appear on the same standings page, with a marker indicating each participant's selected division. Ratings are also planned to be calculated separately for each division and awarded based on performance within that division.
Proposed Rules for Each Division
human only division
The use of generative AI for contest participation is prohibited, except for limited uses such as code completion and translation of the problem statement.
For example, participants may not use generative AI to consider solution approaches, generate, modify, review, or debug code, or analyze execution results or scores.
The use of generative AI for purposes unrelated to the contest, such as work, study, or personal matters, is not prohibited.
with AI division
Participants may use generally available generative AI services to consider solution approaches and to generate or modify code.
However, AHC is intended to be a contest in which humans solve problems, not a contest of AI system development. Therefore, dedicated AI tools designed to solve AHC problems, such as ALE-Agent, and dedicated systems that use APIs, scripts, or similar methods to automate solution generation, execution, evaluation, and improvement are prohibited.
The scope of permitted generative AI use in the with AI division, including whether to allow automatic improvement loops performed internally by generally available generative AI services based on program execution results, will be updated as appropriate based on survey responses, future contest results, and developments in generative AI.
Short-Term AHCs
Short-term AHCs will not be divided into separate divisions. They will be held only in the human only format, in which generative AI may not be used except for limited uses such as code completion and translation of the problem statement.
Compared with long-term AHCs, short-term AHCs generally require less code, so we believe the implementation burden without generative AI is relatively limited.
In addition, if problems are designed with the use of AI in mind, solving those problems in the human only format may place a substantial burden on participants. Conversely, if conventional problems are used in the with AI format, expensive AI plans already leave relatively little room for participants to contribute their own solution ideas or improvement strategies.
To preserve a contest experience in which participants engage with the problem and conduct their own trial and error within the limited contest time, short-term AHCs will be held only in the human only format.
Onsite Contests, Including AWTF
Onsite contests, including AWTF, have a relatively short duration and fall between short-term and long-term AHCs in format.
We are therefore considering holding onsite contests either in the human only format or in a with AI format with substantially stricter restrictions on generative AI than the online with AI division.
